Personal preferences matter in this interview. The physician spends a lot time with their assistant, and they will not hire you unless they feel good around you.
Try to be nice, show respect, show some recognition for their work and practice. We feel good with people of the same “blood group”, but also with people who show some recognition for our career and for what we do. This is your best bet in an interview.
Good pre-interview research will help
- Find out as much as you can about the doctor and the practice. The knowledge will help you with your honest compliments on their work.
- Check what is new in the industry. The physician can also learn something from their assistant. Show them that you have a knowledge of the latest trends, that you can actually bring some value to their practice.
Ten typical questions they will ask you in an interview
- Why do you want to work in our practice, and not in another place?
- What characterize a good physician assistant in your view?
- How do you imagine a typical day in work, if we hire you.
- From your point of view, what are the main duties of the physician assistant?
- Have you any experience with prescribing medication, surgery assistance, or conducting physical exams?
- Where do you see your career heading in the future?
- Why have you chosen PD and not MD?
- Do you prefer to give orders, or to take them?
- Describe a conflict you had with the colleague (classmate, teacher), and how you (or other person) solved the conflict.
- What do you consider your main strengths and weaknesses as a physician?
